The Opportunity

We are looking for a driven, results-oriented, team player to join our team. This is a great opportunity to work alongside industry experts, develop client relationships, work as part of a dynamic and successful team and grow a book of business to support our ambitious growth goals.

 

This role supports our Toronto based Commercial Property and Casualty Team with a strong focus on account retention and underwriting renewal business. We are currently hybrid with the expectation all employees can come into our Downtown Toronto office on a regular basis located at Bay and Adelaide.

 

Job Responsibilities

This role plays a critical part of our business retention and growth strategy. You will help brokers by being responsive and tactical, working towards finding competitive solutions for their accounts, while refining & expanding your underwriting skills in progressive environment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Maintaining and Growing a Renewal Book of Business:

  • Maintain existing broker relationships to solicit renewals and generate new business opportunities
  • Drive client satisfaction and loyalty by ensuring prompt and courteous client service to all brokers
  • Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of company operations and procedures
  • Utilize other Burns & Wilcox Canada offices via referrals to place business and provide comprehensive solutions

 

Analyzing Risk and Placing Business:

  • Maintain knowledge of carriers’ underwriting guidelines and/or domestic and international markets
  • Obtain adequate underwriting information for quoting, binding, and issuing
  • Review coverage requirements, prices, and conditions
  • Negotiate prices, terms, and conditions
  • Submit quality submissions to markets
  • Provide consultation to brokers regarding differences between quotes and coverages
  • Promptly review inspections to verify quality of risk
  • Ensure all renewal business is reviewed and quoted appropriately
  • Ensure all files are documented properly to avoid potential E&O’s
  • Maintain carrier relationships
  • Stay abreast of underwriting practices and maintain licenses and certifications

 

Mentorship and Collaboration with Team members:

  • Train, develop, and nurture assistant/associate underwriters – skill, process knowledge, and professional competencies
  • Help manage priorities and workload of assistant/associate underwriters on your team
  • Cultivate trust, lead by example, and maintain an open door for team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years of full time underwriting experience, MGA experience preferred
  • Hold a CIP, CRM, or comparable designations or actively pursuing
  • Hold a broker license (Level 1 or 2), or can qualify for a license within 90 day
