  • Kaufman, Payton & Chapa concentrates its practice in commercial litigation, insurance litigation, regulatory law and corporate law.  We are seeking a Legal Assistant with 7+ years of litigation experience working personal injury attorneys primarily from the plaintiff’s perspective.  The ideal candidate will be able to work with several attorneys, coordinating their deposition and trial schedules; e-file documents; and transcribe dictation.  Familiarity with PC Law or other Law Firm Management software is important.  This position offers excellent compensation benefits, including comprehensive health insurance and participation in an employer matching 401(k) savings plan.  

    Responsibilities

    • Supporting several attorneys while working in a team atmosphere
    • Interacts with clients, courts, co-counsel, and support staff
    • Keeps the assigned attorney’s calendars in PC Law and Outlook
    • Is the attorney’s main point of contact when he is out of the office to ensure that any client calls, incoming mail, etc. is brought to his attention
    • Transcribes Dictation; possesses superior grammar and proofreading skills
    • Creates captions and inputs all client and vendor information into PC Law
    • Populates PC Law, noting all client information, vendor, courts, liens and other pertinent information on the file
    • Works with Court Reporters, vendors and Experts, as needed
    • Is proficient with electronic filing of documents at all levels – Court of Appeals, Federal Courts, and Circuit Courts
    • Is familiar with the Michigan Court Rules with respect to filing of documents (Answers, Case Evaluations, Arbitrations, etc.)
    • Processes all incoming and outgoing mail; prepares documents for scanning
    • Assists with attorney billing as necessary, understanding the appropriate language mandated by insurance company guidelines
    • Assists attorneys in preparation for trial (trial binders and exhibits)
    • Requests records via Subpoena or with a record service provider
    • Assists with the opening and closing of files, to ensure that all procedures have been followed

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and work experience
    • 7 +  years Legal Assistant experience preferred
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Digital Dictation, PC Law (or an equivalent calendar and billing system)
